In a few months, the use of the federal ID card will be fully enforced — meaning passengers boarding for domestic air travel or entering federal facilities will be required to show their REAL ID, according to the U.

"Time is running out to get a REAL ID or Enhanced ID, and you do not want to get stuck at airport security if you are not prepared," said DMV Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder. "The time is now to get this taken care of so you are not scrambling at the last minute."

REAL ID enforcement begins May 7, two decades after President Bush signed a law mandating them. But more than a third of circulating IDs still aren't compliant.
