At a meeting of governors at the White House on Feb. 21, Maine governor Janet Mills defied president Donald Trump's threat to withhold federal funding.

Threat level: May 7 is the enforcement deadline for Real ID after years of delays. The Department of Homeland Security estimates that 61.2% of Real IDs, relative to all driver's license and identification in circulation, will be Real ID-compliant by May 7, according to a final rule published in January.

The deadline for obtaining REAL ID is coming up on May 7, and right now, only about 30% of people have one. Thus, demand is about to go up.

After years of delays, the deadline for New Jerseyans to obtain a Real ID for travel purposes is less than three months away.

In a few months Nevadans standing in the airport security line will be asked to provide their ticket and Real ID, but what will happen if you don’t have one? The countdown clock on the Department of Homeland Security website to May 7 may seem stark,

REAL ID was put into place by the Real ID Act after 9/11 but its enforcement had been postponed a number of times including because of the pandemic.

Those pre-approved can do it online. If not, to get a Real ID in PA you must show one proof of identity and legal status in the U.S., like your birth certificate or passport, and one proof of your social security number, and two proofs of your current, physical address.
