Plainfield, New Jersey, was forced to cancel its July Fourth celebrations after severe thunderstorms caused damage and knocked out power across central New Jersey. Governor Phil Murphy announced multiple deaths.

Heavy thunderstorms killed several people and caused widespread damage in New Jersey overnight ahead of the holiday weekend, authorities said, as storms walloped the Northeast.

With storms crossing from west to east across the state on Friday, there is a low-end risk for severe weather. The main threat with storms will be damaging wind.
