Armed clashes broke out on Monday evening in Libya’s capital, Tripoli, after reports emerged that a senior militia leader had been killed, prompting a call for de-escalation from the United Nations.

CAIRO (AP) — Clashes between heavily armed militias rocked the Libyan capital, with gunfire and explosions heard across the city following the killing of a powerful warlord, officials said. At least six people were killed, they said.

The UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) expressed concern Tuesday over ongoing clashes in the North African nation’s capital. "UNSMIL is deeply alarmed by escalating violence in densely populated neighborhoods of Tripoli for the second night in a row, placing countless civilians at grave risk," it said on X.
