Country music star Johnny Rodriguez has died aged 73, with his family paying tribute and describing him as "irreplaceable". The singer was best known for the hit song Ridin' My Thumb To Mexico.

The family lost their father when Rodriguez was 16 and he was just getting started forming a band. His brother died the next year. Both losses sent him “spiraling,” the hall of fame said.

Rodriguez was named the most promising male vocalist at the 1972 Academy of Country Music Awards, and his debut, “Introducing Johnny Rodriguez,” was nominated for album of the year in 1973.
