The direct strike killed three people as confirmed by the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem hours after the attack.

Top church leaders visited Gaza yesterday after its only Catholic church was struck by an Israeli shell on Thursday. The attack killed three people and wounded 10, including a priest who had developed a close friendship with the late Pope Francis.

The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, in a July 14 statement, called on the Israeli government to hold those responsible to account.

For his part, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, expressed doubt that the attack was not deliberate.
