Accused Minnesota assassin Vance Boelter's alleged plan to kill more politicians on his target list was foiled by a police sergeant's proactive hunch, and his capture came after he made a big misstep that exposed his whereabouts to an eagle-eyed neighbor, authorities said.

A suspect is in custody after Minnesota state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband were fatally shot Saturday, while state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife were wounded.

The family of Melissa and Mark Hortman, who were killed by a gunman in their home over the weekend, has gathered at the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office in Minnetonka to oversee the formal procession for the Hortmans.

State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were gunned down at their home early on Saturday morning, but survived. Yvette Hoffman said in a statement that she and her husband John were "devastated" by the Hortmans' deaths.
