Researchers at Mount Washington Observatory in New Hampshire observed 4.1 inches of snow at the summit since Thursday afternoon, according to an official post on X shared Friday morning.

The Mount Washington Avalanche Center reported that the slide took place in Hillman’s Highway after "several inches of new snow and several hours of significant wind loading.” ...

Anecdotal evidence shows that snow in parts of the Presidential Mountains lasted until August during the mid 1900s. Now, snow is expected to last until about June and come back in October.

By late Sunday, the Mount Washington State Park snowcat, a ski resort groomer-type vehicle, started up the mountain’s auto road with nine rescuers and arrived at the summit just before midnight.

According to Mount Washington Observatory, warm fog and rain over the weekend ate away at the snowpack. The summit typically sees snow into May and even early June.

CINCINNATI — As snow piles on the sides of streets and driveways after an unrelenting week of winter, a Mount Washington woman is finally free from being snowed in for days.

“That snow has nothing to stick to,” said Amy Cotter, a weather observer and education specialist with the Mount Washington Observatory at the peak at 6,288 feet (1,916 meters).
