Run entirely by volunteers, the New York event was first held in 1762, making it the oldest St. Patrick’s Day parade in the world, according to its website. It’s also the largest, drawing about 150,000 marchers and nearly two million spectators each year, the site says.

Presented by the South Boston Allied War Veterans Council, the Southie parade full of colorful floats, marching bands, bagpipes and dancing celebrates not only St. Patrick's Day, but also Evacuation Day, when the British left Boston during the Revolutionary War.

The St. Pat’s for All parade started when the more famous Fifth Avenue parade barred queer groups. Twenty-six years later, it welcomes Palestinian solidarity organizations.
