A cargo ship transporting 3,000 cars was abandoned in the middle of the Pacific Ocean on Tuesday after a massive fire broke out. As of Friday, the ship was still burning. The blaze may have been fueled by the vehicles’ lithium-ion batteries, which are notoriously difficult to extinguish once ignited.

An auto transport ship carrying hundreds of EVs and in total a few thousand cars was abandoned in the Pacific Ocean. The United States Coast Guard says in a press release it responded on the afternoon of June 4 to the situation,

A cargo ship named Morning Midas, carrying about 3,000 vehicles, including approximately 800 electric models, was abandoned in the Pacific Ocean after a fire.
